Local business ships cable worldwide

Most of USBFireWire.com's customers don't know -- or care -- where the company they are doing business with is located.

"Most people find us in a search online with an engine like Google or Yahoo," said Riz Husami, who owns the company with partner Rick Wessley. "They know what they need; we ship it to them."

Husami and Wessley have office and warehouse space in downtown Wichita in the Sutton Place office building.

Every day, they ship USB and FireWire cables to customers all over the world.

"We've developed a specialty in custom-built cables. People need a special adapter, an angled connection, a short cable to hook a phone to a laptop or whatever," Wessley said. "We either find the cable or have it made for them."

Wessley and Husami started the company a little more than eight years ago and have been in business full time for a little more than two years.

They were high school classmates at Wichita East High School but became friends when they were working and attending Wichita State University in the entrepreneurship program.

"We both knew we wanted to start a business, but we weren't sure what," Husami said.

Then, one day while "noodling around" on the Internet, Wessley discovered that the domain name USBFireWire.com was available.

"I'd been thinking about something in computer connections because I was working in a wholesale cable store," he said.

The partners raised their startup money by buying, repairing and selling a wrecked motorcycle. Wessley set up the computer side of the business in his basement; Husami stored inventory in his apartment.

At first, they simply marketed computer, camera, video and other cables. About five years ago, they discovered a niche in custom cables.

And Husami was able to quit his day job and go full time doing sales and marketing for USBFireWire.com. Their mission statement is simple: "You think it -- we will develop it!"

Growth has been slow but steady. In their first year, they made about $500. Last year, they sold almost $500,000. Last year, Wessley quit his job and joined the company full time.

They've written their goals and sales objectives in grease pencil on the floor-to-ceiling windows in their office.

"There's a lot of potential," Husami said. "We're excited."
